About After School
After School Activities was created by Alex Pergament at 660 Studios in Jersey City, New Jersey to promote and experiment with improvisational, collaborative, and weird music. The first season of After School Activities featured 111 nights of improvised music, using an open-stage format with curated feature musicians and curated structures from February 2016 through October 2018. The After School archive is accessible on Soundcloud.
Season 2 begins in February 2019.
After School Orchestra, featuring a curated one-night-only improvisational band, grew out of After School Activities. The Orchestra has a rotating cast of 12 musicians who perform on the 23rd of every month at different locations in Jersey City. In August 2018, the Orchestra spent a month at IIWII Studios in Weehawken, NJ with Produced Billy Perez, recording a series of improvised sessions. The resulting recordings will be released in early 2019.
Alex Pergament is an improvisational musician and visual artist living in Jersey City, NJ. The focus of Alex’s work is on free-form improvisation as a tool for live discovery—he feels that the most interesting thing to be a part of and to witness is a new creative discovery rather than a performance. Alex also improvises in yuuge with Nick Afflitto and Jerry Ramos. Alex is a former artist-in-residence at 660 Studios, and the recipient of several grants from COJECO, Genesis Philanthropy Group, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the creator of a large-scale collaborative wooden book installation, Helga and Carl.
